A few weeks ago, my husband discovered an old first-day-of-school picture at his mom’s house.
He thought it was quite funny and decided to post it as his Facebook profile picture. He was shocked to find that over 20 people would comment about the picture. I guess that many people have great memories of their first day of school. Either that or they just wanted to make fun of him! Thankfully, he has changed his profile pic!
Each of us has memories (whether good or bad!) of going back to school.
In Texas we always look forward to school starting because all we have around here in August is 103 degree days. Shockingly, this can make even the pools hot! My kids were swimming at my in-laws last week and said it felt like a hot tub. Refreshing? That’s not refreshing! At least school is air conditioned.
Every year as we gear up for the start of school, our family has some annual traditions. Do you have any back-to-school traditions that you do with your kids? Here are a few of ours . . .
Donuts with friends at Krispy Kreme.
One last dip in the pool with our friends The Bellers.
And, of course, the famous back-to-school haircut!
Tell us about your traditions. Maybe we’ll steal a new one from you! Also, what are your great memories from school beginning? Is it the new school supplies or maybe new shoes or maybe just the joy of seeing your friends again? We’d love to hear about your good ol’ school days.

I loved going shopping for my school supplies and I loved getting all my new school clothes. Even when I was teaching I so enjoyed both of those things. The simple things in life…a new box of 96 crayons. Ha ha!
Um, I’d comment about Kent’s outfit except I also sported some rockin’ tube socks in the 70′s….and I’m a girl. Gotta love the micro mini gym shorts too.
We always got a new lunchbox before school, the metal kind with a thermos inside–remember:)?? My fave was my “Peanuts”
Oh how I loved my Strawberry Shortcake lunchbox and oh how I hated that my mom gave me milk in my thermos everyday… how HUMILIATING. Clearly, a good mom would have given me Kool Aid like all the other kids got! I am guessing Kent has milk in his Thermos too!
Shopping is a HUGE part of our back to school routine! Hunter & Parker even like going shopping for their new clothes!! And of course, Skylar & I never miss an opportunity to go shopping!! We also like to swim as much as we can at the end of Summer, because our family is full of little fishes!! We all love to swim! Our free time will now be filled with homework & soccer practice!! We’ll definitely look forward to our mini breaks throughout the year!
Mom and I would go to Marshall’s just before school started and fill a basket full of clothes. We couldn’t afford to buy all of them, so we’d put some on lay-away and I’d get them in a couple weeks for my birthday. Ahhhh…the memories! I specifically remember the Palmetto jeans I got one year (continue the “we couldn’t afford” theme as I am sure I would have prefered Guess jeans!). Sweet (but not as sweet as Kent’s glasses)!!
I was one of the commenters on Facebook…Kent’s picture made me laugh OUT LOUD! We always buy the kids a new back to school outfit and new shoes! The girls spend weeks thinking about what they are going to wear on that first day. Blayne…all he cared about was getting some cool shoes! My kids love school and can hardly sleep the night before it starts. They have had a great first two days and have been chatter boxes at night. As far as traditions, we let the kids made a list of things that they want to do in the summer. Usually it is things that don’t require a lot of money, but just time! Usually the week before school, I am frantically trying to check off all the items on the list! I love back-to-school and getting back into a routine!
I used to enjoy my birthday BEFORE school started until they changed the law sometime while I was in high school (think), I had to start going to school on my birthday. Then I decided to become a teacher so I have to work at school on my birthday. Oh well, the kids are usually sweet about if they find out!!
ah yes, the layaway! i LOVED going shopping for back to school and i remember the trapper keeper! oh, i loved my trapper keeper and having it all organized…still do
michelle, i love your back to school traditions…i look forward to doing the same with my boys and making memories
In response to the picture of my heritage, I just want to remind all who laughed and mocked me: we’ve all had bad looks. We just didn’t know it at the time.
